β Reference Information.
π The historic Apollo 11 mission marked the momentous achievement of landing humans on the Moon. Led by Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin, the American crew successfully touched down on the lunar surface on July 20, 1969, at 20:17 UTC.
β The Apollo 11 plaque proudly bears the inscription: “Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon July 1969, A.D. We came in peace for all mankind,” boldly written in capital letters.
π Six hours and 39 minutes after landing, Armstrong made history by becoming the first person to step onto the lunar surface at 02:56 UTC on July 21. Aldrin joined him just 19 minutes later. Together, they spent approximately two and a quarter hours exploring outside the spacecraft, collecting 47.5 pounds (21.5 kg) of lunar material to bring back to Earth.
π Armstrong’s iconic first step on the lunar surface was broadcasted live to a global audience, forever etching his words, “One small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind,” into history.
π Reflecting on their mission, Aldrin fondly recalled the flag raising as one of the tasks he wanted to go smoothly during their time on the Moon.
